Nutrition evaluation of ensiling fresh maize stover

Abstract: Chemical composition and yield of fresh maize stover of 15 hybrids of maize crop were determined immediately after harvesting. Also, quality and nutritive values of maize stover silages for all experimental hybrids were investigated.
There were appreciable differences in chemical composition and the yield of fresh stover of the experimental hybrids and its silage. The content of the fifteen hybrids being ranged from 27.42 to 33.75% for DM, 89.97 to 92.34% for OM, 5.46 to 7.33% for CP, 1.79 to 2.91% for EE 28.17 to 32.25% for CF, 50.55 to 53.89% for NFE and 7.66 to 10.03% for ash. Experimental fresh maize stover had content of DM and NFE suitable for ensiling without additive. All chemical constituents of maize stover silage were lower than fresh stover except that of ash content, which was higher in stover silage than fresh stover. Although the tested fresh stover ensiled without any additives, it produced good quality silage with suitable fermentation characteristics, e.g. yellowish green color and good smell.
The in situ Dm disappearance (ISMD) and in situ OM disappearance (ISOMD) of the tested silages after 48 hours of incubation in buffalo bulls rumens varied from 20.50 to 34.50% for ISMD and 22.40 to 36.50% for ISOMD. The differences between the fifteen maize stover silages in the digestibility coefficient values of all nutrients were significant. The average nutritive values of maize stover silages on DM basis were 3.16% and 57.72% for DCP and TDN, respectively.
The out put of ensiled tested fresh maize stover immediately after harvesting of the nutrients production were 0.19 for CP, 0.10 for DCP and 1.76 for TDN ton/feddan on the average, in addition to their production from grains. Fresh stover of the single cross (SC10) had the highest nutrients production as the result of ensiling as CP, DCP and TDN (0.23, 0.14 and 2.11 ton/feddan, respectively) comparable with other tested hybrids.
