Simultaneous outbreaks of Rinderpest and contagious bovine Pleuropneumonia among slaughtered cattle imported to Islamic port of Jeddah.

Abstract: Clinical symptoms and post-mortem lesions of Rinderpest and Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia ) CBPP) were observed among slaughter cattle imported from Urguay, Ireland and West Germany, and successfully mixed together in the merchants" yards in Jeddah, immediately after their vaccination against rinderpest in the port.
Lymph nodes and/or spleen samples collected from 28 animals were examined by immunodiffusion test for rinderpest diagnosis and precipitating antigen was detected in samples of 14 animals (50%) . Out of 4 lungs examined M. mycoides subsp. mycoides was isolated from 3 ) 75%) . The simultaneous occurrence of both diseases was confirmed in one animal.
Out of total 11655 animals, 4376 (38%) died over a period of 26 days. Epizootological investigations were undertaken in order to identify the possible source(s) of infection after arrival of the animals to Jeddah.
Proposals were made to vaccinate the slaughter cattle imported from countries free from rinderpest on board transport ships and to establish an emergency program for identifying and containing the CBPP foci in the Kingdom.
