The role of abattoirs in indentifying animal zoonosis .

Abstract: In Saudi Arabia there are ten modern and about 100 ordinary abattoirs. Annual data of Municipalities (1979-1984) revealed the presence of eleven zoonotic diseases among slaughtered animals. Six caused partial condemnation of 432044 organs representing 2.86% of the total slaughtered animals (15652845) including: Fascioliasis ( 147890), Hydatidosis (140555), Caseous lymphadenitis (61454), Cysticercosis ( 41270), Abcesses ( 24626) and localized Tuberculosis ( 16249).
Nine diseases caused total condemnation of more than 5715carcasses: Caseous lymphadenitis (3283), Cysticercosis (1917), generalized Tuberculosis ( 578), Ovine Pasteurellosis (35), Ovine Brucellosis (1), Rabies in camel (1) as well as undetermined numbers of Hydatidosis, paemia and Foot and Mouth Disease.
The epidemiology of these zoonotic diseases was discussed. To provide human with meat fit for consumption some suggestions about abattoirs were summarized.
