Mycoplasamal mastitis in a dairy herd in saudi arabia
|
|
Abstract: A herd of 1500 milking Holstein-Friesian cows was investigated after some of them developed an unusual form of mastitis which resisted local and systemic antibacterial therapy. The affected cows had pronounced agalactia and swollen quarters without heat or pain, and the milk showed flaky or gelatinous deposits. No systemic disorders were noted . Mycoplasma organisms were isolated from the bulk tank milk. Several cows representing >10% of the herd were culled due to agalactia and udder fibrosis after unsuccessful treatment. Fresh milk samples from all cows in the herd ( 1350 ) were individually cultured on mycoplasma medium. Twenty-two mycoplasma isolates were recovered ,of these, twenty isolate were identified as M. bovis and two as M. bovirhinis using colony characteristics, biochemical characterization and serological typing.
