Role of mycoplasmas in reproductive disorders and mastitis in sheep and goats

Abstract: A total of 237 specimens ( 97 vagina, 50 milk, 66 prepuce and 24 semen) were collected from diseased and apparently healthy sheep. In addition 206 samples from goats ( 86 vaginal, 111 milk and 9 prepuce) were cultured for mycoplasmas.
The overall recovery rate of mycoplasmas were higher in ovine (27.43%) than caprine (10.19%).In sheep, M. arginini (19.97%), M. agalactiae (7.38%), M. ovipneumoniae (2.29%), M. bovigenetalium (7.14%), A .laidlawii (8.16%) and A. oculi (44.44%) were the most prevalent species in diseased animals, suffering from vaginitis, endometeritis, mastitis, balanoposithitis and azospermia in addition to healthy sheep. In goats, M. putrifaciens, M. agalactiae and M arginini were the only species detected in animals suffering from vaginitis and mastitis.
