SOME STUDIES ON HYPERNATREMIA IN CAMELS WITH A TRIAL FOR TREATMENT

Abstract: Nine fattening male camels about 14 months-old ,with average body weight 225 kg ,were used in this study, during July 2003. Six camels accidentally fed on concentrated ration with improperly mixed sodium chloride 5% and exposed to water deprivation ,and three apparently healthy camels fed on the same ration containing 1% sodium chloride and obtained water addlib were used as control . The major clinical sings observed were dehydration, lethargy, depression and decreased feed intake . Sudden nervous signs were observed on three camels after drinking of more water . These sings included disorientation, ataxia, extension and spasms of the neck and unawared of its surrounding . Two blood samples were obtained ,the first sample (with anticoagulant) was used for determination of packed cell volume, and the second sample (without anticoagulant ) was used for serum separation and determination of sodium, chloride, potassium, urea ,creatinine, albumin, globulin and total protein .
The obtained results showed hypernatremia, hyperkalemia hyperchloremia increased , urea, creatinine , total protein and packed cell volume . In conclusion ,the diagnosis of hypernatremia are based on history of increased sodium intake, deprivation of water and measurement of serum sodium levels. Treatment of the camels with hypernatremia and dehydration by intravenous injection of sodium solution of the same concentration as serum sodium allivated the condition
