Some biochemical studies on copper deficiency in heifrs, feed high dietary iron
|
|
Abstract: The clinical sings of copper deficiency were observed on 15 dairy heifers, 6-9 months old. Chemical analysis of the diet, consumed by the heifer's revealed high concentration of iron (352mg iron / kg D.M.) and copper content was 7.9 mg copper / kg D.M..The major clinical sings were, decrease feed intake, unthriftness, change in coat color, anemia diarrhea and enlargement of the joints. Some animals become recumbent and died. The biochemical data, of affected heifers, showed significant decrease in serum and liver copper content and significant increase in the serum and liver iron content compared with the treated heifers. Moreover blood analysis revealed decreased total RBCs count and hemoglobin percentage. The losses and disease condition as well as abnormal biochemical alteration were completely disappeared after correction of the diet with optimal requirement of copper (10 mg copper/ kg DM) and iron ( 50 mg / kg DM) and treatment with copper sulphate.
