Fatal Diarrhoea in newly born foals

Abstract: 20 newly born foals from a private horse farm with sings of diarrhoea,and 20 apparently healthy foals were encountered in this study . The clinical signs were fever, anorexia, colic, diarrhoea, loss of consciousness, dyspnea and recumbency. Clostridium spp., Salmonella spp. and E.coli were incriminated as causative agents in this problem.
Changes in the blood parameters, serumeters, serum enzyme activity and serum electrolytes in infected foals were observed. At necropsy the dead foals shwed bloody watery diarrhoes and haemorrhagic streeaks in the dead foals showed Histopathological examination revealed variable degrees of congestion, oedema, haemorrhage, erosion and necrosis throught the mucosal and submucosal layer. in some cases loss of villus architecture, sloughing of epithelium and infium and infiltration with inflammatory cells
