Carcinogenicity of piperonyl Butoxide in rats

Abstract: Piperonyl butoxide is one of the commonly used ingredients in houehold as pyrethrum synergist. Cypermethrin, a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide is used widely because of its high bio-efficacy and low manmalian toxicity. in the present set of investigations, piperonyl butoxide hasbeen evaluated for its carcinogenic andco-carcinogenic (incombination with cypermethrin ) potential in male rats. The results revealed that piperonyl butoxide possess a complete carcinogenic effect specially in combination with cypermethrin as well as tumour initiating and promoting potential in male albino rats. one hundred and sixty five male albino rats were used in this work. 56 rats were used for detecting the LD50 of the two tested pesticides and 100 rats were used for studying their chronic toxicity. this work, the LD50 of piperonyi butoxiede is 4.996=0.056 gm\kg b.wt., while the LD50 of cypermethrin is 398.8807=0.485 mg\kg b.wt.
