This study investigates the problem of the increasing demand for Egyptian onions, especially in Arab countries' markets, which cannot be covered by the annually produced volume of onions. The study aims at estimating the main indicators on onions production and exports, in addition to identifying the main factors influencing the supply response of onions, estimating Egyptian onions export function, and identifying its main export markets.
Studying the evolution of the main indicators on onions production show that total onions acreage, productivity per feddan, and total production have been increasing at an annual rates of 1.3%, 2.3%, and 3.6% during the period 1992-2007. Results also show that the distribution rate of local production on both domestic consumption and exports amounted to 73.2% and 13.5% respectively, leaving an average surplus of 13.3% during the studied period. In addition, results indicate that farm-gate price per ton and total cost per feddan has been increasing at annual rate of 5.4% and 4.8% respectively, while net revenue per feddan, and invest profit for onions fluctuated around L.E 1315 and 0.64 in averages respectively during the studied period. The study revealed that the main factors affecting onions acreage in the current year include onions acreage and farm-gate price per ton lagged one year, where both factors reflected 69% of changes in onions acreage in the current year during the period 1992-2007.
The estimated general regression equations for the volume, value, and export price of Egyptian onions indicate that onions exports volume, value and price have been increasing at an annual rate of 8.1% , 14.3% and 7.2% respectively. The estimated price elasticity of onions exports shows that a 10% increase in export price results in decreasing the demand to Egyptian onions exports by 3.5%. Moreover, onions export price explained 40% of the total changes occurring in the volume of exports during the period 1995-2007.
Results indicate instability in the volume, value, and export price of Egyptian onions during the period 1995-2007, which can be attributed to the apparent variation in the distribution of onions exports among different markets, and the price variations between those markets where more than half of Egypt's onions exports, estimated at 197 thousand tons, are concentrated in the Saudi market, which value represented 34.4% of the total exports value estimated at US $ 21.5 million in average during the period 1995-2007.
