The current research aims at conducting a comparative study on the average per capita consumption of major groups of food and drink between the years (1999/2000) and (2004/2005) in urban areas (i.e. cereal and bread, meat, fish, milk along with cheese and eggs, oils and fats, fruits, vegetables, sugar and sweeteners, and non-alcoholic beverages). Moreover, the current research aims at measuring the relationship between the value of consumption of the above-mentioned groups as the dependent variable and the consumptive expenditure as the independent variable separately, and thus estimating the expenditure elasticity besides investigating the most important factors affecting the expenditure on food and drink (i.e. the per capita income, the family size, the educational status of the head of household, the economic activity of the head of household, the sector in which the head of household works, the practical status of the head of household and the main occupation of the head of household).
However, the main results of the current study indicate the following:
- The total real consumptive expenditure declined by about 22.2% between the years (1999/2000) and (2004/2005). Moreover, the total expenditure on food and drink declined by about 14.1% between the two years.
- The coefficient of determination indicates that about 83%-99% of the changes in expenditure on different groups of food and drink in the year (1999/2000), besides about 91%-99% of the expenditure on these groups in (2004/2005) are due to changes in the level of consumptive expenditure (income).
- According to the statistical results and the common digital economic classification for the expenditure elasticity, bread and cereals, oils and fats, and vegetable necessary commodities. On the other hand, meat, fish, milk along with cheese and eggs, fruit, sugar and sweeteners, and non-alcoholic beverages are considered as semi-necessary commodities in the same two years, respectively.
- The most important factors affecting the expenditure on food and drink for the year (1999/2000) are the per capita income, the main occupation of the head of household, the educational status of the head of household, the economic activity of the head of household, the practical status of the head of household, the sector in which the head of household works, and the family size, respectively. As for the year (2004/2005), these factors are the per capita income, the family size, the educational status of the head of household, the sector in which the head of household works, the main occupation of the head of household, the practical status of the head of household, and the economic activity of the head of household, respectively.
