Economics of Oil Seed Crops In Egypt

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Edible oil is regarded as one of the most important commodities needed for human consumption Major sources of edible oils are cotton seed , soya bean and sunflower . Egypt has been suffering for a very long time from edible oil deficit resulting from the failure of local production to meet the rising demand for this commodity .
The edible oils gap has always been widening as it reached 86 % in ( 1994 / 1995 ) . That is why the edible oils gap puts much burden on Egypt’s balance of payment .
The obtained results show that the major variables affecting productivity of cotton and soya bean are date of planting , nitrogen unit added and the amount of manure served . With regard to sun flower the study assured that major variables affecting productivity are date of planting , variety and nitrogen units .
Recommendations set up by the study to minimize edible oil food gap in Egypt :
1. Increase the area allocated for oil crops , especially in newly reclaimed areas oily sunflower is highly recommended due to its high content of oil and good compatibility with all kinds of soil .
2. Exert more efforts to introduce Canola as an oil seed to Egypt .
3. Intensify the extension efforts with respect to urging farmer to be committed to timely planting .
4. Put much emphasis on certified seeds and expand high yield and short life varieties .
5. Application of efficient and integrated fertilizing programs .
