An Economic Study For Supply Response of Wheat Crop In Egypt

Wheat is considers the most important crop in Egypt, which is one of the main Strategic crop that related to food security. However, its production capacity is less than its consumption requirements.
So The study aims to investigate the variables that affecting wheat cultivated area in an effort to close the gap between local production and consumption. To achieve this objective, partial adjustment model of Marc Nerlove have been applied to estimate the acreage supply response of wheat.
The study highlights the current status of the wheat in Egypt through studying production and consumption during the period (1993-2013).
The results indicated an increase in wheat cultivated area in Egypt by about 53 thousand Feddan annually, besides an increase in wheat productivity by about 0.03 ton/Feddan. Nevertheless the results showed an increase in the wheat production, consumption, and annually gap estimated by approximately 202.3, 262.4, 60 thousand tons respectively during the same period.
The Study used two approach to estimate wheat supply response:
- The first one involved all variables related to wheat, which indicate that the farmer more response to net return.
- The second involves four scenarios,the results of Marc Nerlove partial adjustment model for wheat supply response functions indicated that, the most effect variable for a positive response to increase the cultivated area of wheat in Egypt were the farm prices and net return of wheat, also the most effect variable for a negative response to decrease the cultivated area of wheat in Egypt was the relative cost between wheat and Broad bean.
The study recommended of the necessity of:
1. Providing information and Guidance of production and prices of wheat to help farmers for making its decisions.
2. Providing the production requirements with suitable prices for increasing profit per feddan.
3. Activation the role of agricultural guidance to raise the productivity of wheat per feddan.
4.Encourage farmers for adopting high productivity Varieties
