Vegetable crops are considered one of the most important agricultural crops, whether in terms of agricultural or export and food, as the demand for them continues and increases throughout the year to increase their nutritional importance for all groups and classes of the people on the one hand and because they are a source of income from foreign currencies obtained as a result of what is issued from them every year from On the other hand, the importance of vegetable crops is evident, whether at the level of the Republic on the one hand or the eastern governorate on the other hand, through the areas that are cultivated with different varieties of vegetables, whether exported or locally consumed with the three seams. The level of the Republic in both the winter, summer and Nile knots in the previous order in the 2012/2013 season, while during the same season in Sharkia governorate about 60,524,75.757,1,642 thousand feddans were planted and this area represents about 10.65%, 10.60%, 1.19% of the total area cultivated with crops Vegetables nationwide and vegetables are considered among the crops of high economic return, due to the short period of their stay on the land. As for the marketing of horticultural crops, especially fruits and vegetables, it must start at the farm door, where production takes place in different types from one farmer to another, and where the capabilities and experience of each product differ, and where the different production factors and weather factors differ, which ultimately gives a production consistent with the impact of all these factors together.
The problem of the study was represented in the presence of constant fluctuation and instability in the prices paid by the vegetable consumer in general, and tomatoes and potatoes in particular in their different markets, which has an impact on the final consumer prices, increasing the items of spending on food, as the producer does not receive prices for his products that achieve a return commensurate with what he spends on Its production and the beneficiaries of this fluctuation are the middlemen class, especially the wholesaler and retailer, despite the low marketing services they perform, which are not commensurate with what they receive from the consumer pound, which requires the importance of identifying the most important problems facing workers in the marketing system of tomato and potato harvesters in particular and proposals to solve them to achieve a return A remunerative product that encourages the continuation of the production process.
The study aimed to identify the production status of tomato and potato crops at the level of both the Republic and the Sharkia Governorate through (area, production and productivity). And to identify the most important social, economic and marketing characteristics of producers and marketers, the most important indicators of economic efficiency and productivity of the study crops, and to know the relationship between production and the elements involved in it through estimating the productive functions of the study yields, and to identify the most important indicators of marketing efficiency of the study’s crop, and to identify the marketing pathways that the crops under study follow. From home of production to home of consumption.
The study relied on two data sources, the first source: preliminary data for a field study that was conducted in three centers in Sharkia governorate on both producers and marketers. While the second source was represented: in secondary data collected from the Directorate of Agriculture in Sharkia Governorate, the Central Administration of Agricultural Economy at the Agricultural Research Center, the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation - Agricultural Economics Bulletins - separate issues.
The study used two methods of descriptive and quantitative analysis, such as in analyzing the general temporal trend, seasonality index, production functions, and economic indicators that were reviewed in a way that benefits the study stages and serves workers in the field of production and marketing of the study crops.
In addition to the introduction, problem, goal and importance of the study, data sources, research method, Arabic and English summary, appendices and references, the study consists of five main chapters. The first chapter explains the theoretical framework and reference review of previous studies, and the second chapter is the current productive situation of tomato and potato crops at the level of the Republic and the Eastern Province. While the third chapter deals with the field study sample in the Sharkia governorate, the fourth chapter deals with the agricultural production functions of the study crops, and finally the fifth chapter deals with the marketing efficiency of the study crops in the Sharkia governorate
