Impact of Food Prices Changes on Small Farmers in Egypt

Abstract: A dramatic changes in the international food grain prices have been occurred during 2008-2009 .This prices more than doubled during the period January 2008 and June 2008. In the same year another dramatic changes have occurred since June 2008, when prices have retreated approximately 50 percent due to the strong production gains ,world financial crisis and the decline of world oil prices.
The objective of the current Egypt`s case study is to understand the nature of price changes in Egypt and the impact of these changes on farming communities and determine the farmers` supply response and the impact of price changes on their livelihoods.
The approach used has focusing mainly on the small farmers who are producing wheat in Egypt. Three regions were selected namely ,Sharkia,Kafr ElShakh and Ismailia governorates. Data and information were collected from three sources; rapid appraisal technique was used (through conducting focus group meeting with knowledgeable farmers),structured questionnaires (120 farmers) ,in addition to the country secondary data .
