Factors affecting egyptian strawberry production and export, with emphasis on Behiera governorate

This research aims to explain the recent situation of Strawberry production and exportation in Egypt, and determine the factors affecting them. The study illustrated that the average area cultivated with Strawberry was about 10.5 th. Feddan yearly during 1990 – 2005 period, the average productivity reached 11.8 ton per feddan.
The study showed that the productivity gained from the traditional production system is about 9.1 tan, while it could l. E 35 tan in the modern system in Behiera governorate. The study also showed that the average cost of production under the two systems were L.E 4450 and L.E17250, while the net return per feddan reached L.E 5560, and L.E 38550 for traditional and modern system respectively.
The regression analysis showed that number of irrigation hours, cost of irrigation, Pesticides quantity, its cost, family labor and quantity of manure are the most affecting variables of production. They represent about 93% from those variables of production changes.
The cost analysis indicated the options productivity which minimize the cost is about 23 feddan per tan.
According to market competitiveness, it was shown that Strawberry export could have some stability. The coefficient of instability in export quantity reached 41.92, while its value has more in stability where its coefficient of instability, reached 43.87 and that could he due to the instability in export prices where its coefficient reached 73.46.
Saudi Arabia and Emrat marketing are importing about 40% from the Egyptian exports. The study recommends more attention to the Arab market.
