Inheritance of earliness and some morphological characteristics in some Egyptian cotton crosses .

Abstract: This study aimed to investigate the type and relative amount of the genetic variance components and their interaction by locations using seven Egyptian cotton varieties ; namely, Giza 45, Giza 70, Giza 75, Giza 85, Giza 87, Giza 88 and Ashmouni. These varieties and their all possible combinations including reciprocal crosses were evaluated at two different locations for some earliness and vegetative traits. The results of this study showed that the varieties Giza 87 and Giza 45 were the best combiners for vegetative traits. However, Giza 45 and Giza 85 in addition to Ashmouni were the best combiner varieties for earliness traits. The intermediate estimates of heritability in narrow sense and broad sense ranged from 44.56% to 86.36% for number of fruiting branches / plant and days to first opening boll, respectively. It could be concluded that additive genetic effects mainly control these traits, while nonadditive and its interactions with epigenetic factors play a minor role in the inheritance of these traits. Therefore, the selection program is a proper to produce superior genotypes for earliness as well as vegetative traits.
