Soil hydrological properties as affected by the distance from Qaroun lake, Fayoum Governorate

Abstract: The present work was carried out on the soils of the northern part of El-Fayoum Governorate, Egypt to study some soil hydrological properties related to the distance from Qaroun lake. Three longitudinal lines started from the lake coast towards the south direction of depression were taken to represent the studied areas. On each line, nine sites served by tile drainage system were selected. All the investigated sites were monitored for the fluctuation of water table depth (W.T.D), the cumulative occurrence percentage of water table depth deeper than 0.8 m was computed and the flow entrance resistance at entry into drain pipes was calculated. The obtained results showed that, water table depth was shallow and closed to soil surface in the soils neighboring to the lake and gradually lowered with increasing the distance from it. At the same time, the cumulative occurrence percentages of water table deeper than 0.8m depth from soil surface were ranged between 36.95 and 75.86; 0.0 and 34.98 and from 0.0 to 67.49% for the soils representing the lines No. 1, 2 and 3, respectively. On the other hand, the highest values of entrance resistance (We) were achieved in the soils close to the lake and decreased with increasing the distance from it. Moreover, it is worthy to mention that the values of (We) in the soils representing line No.2 are greater than that obtained in the other lines (1 and 3). So, the soils situated close to the lake suffer from poor internal drainage and more care is required to choose a proper drainage design to lower and evacuate drainage water
