Some socio-economic factors affecting wheat productivity in Sohag and Qena governorates in A.R.E.

Abstract: The growing of wheat is a result of a number of interrelated factors. Many of those factors are social and economic. The purpose of this study is to examine significant social and economic factors which contribute to the level of wheat productivity. This study was performed in the governorates of Sohag and Qena.
Selecting the sample for the study was based on the following criteria First, three districts were selected for each governorate. They represented the total geographic area of the governorates and every variety of wheat was grown in those districts. Two villages in each district were selected on the same criteria , Twenty farmers were selected in each village by a systematic sampling procedure . The predominant wheat variety in the sample was Giza 155 and thus the study focused on those farmers who grew that variety-138 farmers. The data were collected for the 1985-1986 season by questionnaire. Stepwise regression and the F-test were the statistical measures used in the study. Productivity of Giza 155 will be measured by the amount of grain produced and by the amount of straw produced . Also the net income for the farmer will be measured.
The most important variables affecting the productivity of grain are: farmers' attitude toward the extension agent, farmers' communication with the extension agent, the governorate (location), cost of land preparation, costs of plant protection procedures, and costs of threshing. These six variables explain 29% of the variance with the location explaining the largest amount of that variance . for the production of straw, the variables affecting the productivity are: the age of the farmer, the number of educated family members, farmers' attit¬ude toward extension agent, the farmers' communication with the extension agent, location, the cultivated area, costs of cultivation services, harvesting costs, transportation costs to the winnowing center and threshing costs . These variables explain 62% of variance with location again explaining the largest amount of variance .
The variables affecting the net income are: the number of educated family members, farmers' attitude towards extension agent, the farmers' communication with the extension agent, location, land preparation costs, cultivation costs, plant protection costs, and threshing costs . These variables explain 40% of
the variance with location explaining the largest amount of variance. The implication of this study is that extension programes should consider the examination of such variables when pursuing any extension activities to further improve wheat productivity.
