Study the Engineering Parameters Affect the Performance of Crushing Olive Fruits

Abstract: The designed hammer mill for crushing olive fruits was fabricated with the local stainless steel materials at the workshop of Agric. Eng. Res. Institute (AEnRI) and it was tested and evaluated at the laboratory of Agric. Eng. Dept., Mansoura University. The experimental works were carried out on Shimlaly olive variety.
This research was concerned with studying the engineering parameters of hummer mill such as; [hammers speed 2000, 2500, 3000, and 3500, rpm (23.86, 29.60, 35.51, and 41.43 m/s), screen hole diameters (3,4,and 5, mm), number of hummers (2,4,and 6 hammers), and clearance between tip of hammers and screen concave (2,4,and 6 mm)] affecting the performance of olive fruits crushing which specified in terms as; [three classes of particles size (PS.I< 2 mm, 2< PS.II < 4 mm, and PS.III > 4 mm ), miller efficiency, and miller capacity].
The obtained results indicated that, the optimum operation conditions for the designed hammer mill were 3000 rpm (35.51 m/sec), 4 mm screen hole diameter, 2 mm clearance, and 4 hammer. That optimum conditions were evaluated basically according to the highest value of particle size II ( it was 23.41%), the lowest values of both particle sizes I and III ( they were 73.38 %, and 3.21%), then the efficiency of hammer and the maximum capacity (they were 96.25 % and 293.56 Kg/h, respectively).
The obtained relations between the evaluating parameters as Yi [(particles size PS.I, PS.II, and PS.III), (machine efficiency), and (machine capacity)], and the engineering parameters of hammer mill as Xi [(hammer speed), (screen hole diameter), (number of hammers), and (clearances)] were represented according to the multi-regression analysis in the following empirical equations:
Yi = a + b X1 + c X2 + d X3 + e X4
Also, the step-wise statistical analysis indicated that the percentages of effect each parameter on the evaluating parameters were (49.30, 38.36, 10.86, and 1.48 %) for hammer speed (m/s), Screen hole diameter, Number of hammers, and Clearances between hammers and screens, respectively. Consequently, it is admonish to neglect the effect of clearances in the future studying.
