Rate and extent of digestion of some roughages in rabbits.

Abstract: Twenty five digestibility trials were carried out to study the rate and extent of digestion of some roughages as affected by feeding frequency, feeding and roughage levels. Results showed that digestion coefficients of all nutrients were improved as a result of increased feeding frequency as well as by decreasing roughage and feeding levels. As the feeding and roughage levels increased, the rate of passage (PR) was increased and retention time (RT) decreased. In in vitro studies, a sharp rise in rate of digestion was noted at 4 hrs for corn cobs (CC) and wheat straw (WS) and at 8 hrs for corn stover (CS).
