New weed control treatments for controlling annual weeds in faba bean (Vicia faba L.) in Egypt.

Abstract: Three field experiments were conducted in Sakha Agricultural Research station during 1998/99, 1999/2000 and 2000/2001 seasons to evaluate some new weed control treatments for controlling annual weeds and faba bean yield as well. The experimental site was naturally heavily infested with Phalaris spp estimated by 8.16, 4.83 and 7.38 t/fed., respectively at three seasons. Data of 1998/99 season revealed that Gesagard 80% WP applied at 1 kg/fed. plus hand hoeing (once); Gesagard 80% at 1 kg/fed. (alone); and hand hoeing (twice) were effective against annual weeds. These treatments reduced fresh weight of annual weeds by 86, 85 and 76% and significantly increased faba bean seed yield by 0.387, 0.494 and 0.420 t/fed., respectively compared to weedy check. Meanwhile, data of 1999/2000 season indicated that Gesagard 80% at 1 kg/fed. plus Fusilade super 12.5% at 1 L/fed.; and Gesagard 80% at 1 kg/fed. plus hand hoeing (once) were effective against annual weeds. These treatments reduced fresh weight of annual weeds by 97 and 95% and significantly increased faba bean seed yield by 0.274, 0.278 t/fed., respectively compared to weedy check. Data of 2000/2001 season revealed that Gesagard 80% at 1 kg/fed. plus hand hoeing (once); Fusilade super 12.5% at 1 L/fed; Gesagard 80% at 1.25 kg/fed.; and Gesagard 80% at 1 kg/fed. were the most effective treatments for controlling annual weeds. These treatments reduced fresh weight of total annual weeds by 100, 100, 97 and 95%, respectively. It could be concluded that this study came up with several promising weed control treatments against annual weeds in faba bean field such as Gesagard 80% at 1 kg/fed. plus hand hoeing (once); Gesagard 80% at 1 kg/fed. plus Fusilade super 12.5% at 1 L/fed.; Gesagard 80% at 1 kg/fed; Fusilade super 12.5% at 1 L/fed; and hand hoeing (twice). These treatments were effective against annual weeds and significantly increased faba bean seed yield.
