Effect of planting date and plant spacing on growth yield and yield components of cassava plants as new crop in Toshky region, Egypt.

Abstract: Two field trials were carried out in the new reclaimed land in toshky region in the Horticultural farm (Abo-Simble) to optimize some cultural practices (date of planting and plant spacing of cassava plants). Treatments were laid out randomly in split plot design which were the combinations of three dates of planting. 1st and mid of April and 1st of may and three plant spacing; 75, 100 and 150 cm apart in 2002 and 2003 seasons. The results obtained indicated that the earliest date of planting (1st of April) was associated with least number of total branches/ plant, number of total tubers plant, average length of marketable and unmarketable tubers/plant, average diameter of marketable and unmarketable tubers/plant, weight of fresh tubers/plant and the yield of cassava tuber and forage per feddan. Growth, yield and yield components of cassava grown in mid of April were slightly higher than those grown at the first of May. Differences were also insignificant. The analysis of metrological data evidenced that the averages day temperature and difference between day and night temperature and humidity were more effective factors on the yield of tubers forage. The data also indicated that there were gradual and consistent increases in number of total branches/plant, all yield component traits of tubers. With increasing plant spacing up to the widest.( 150 cm. apart.). On other hand, yield of tuber and forage followed, reversal trends. There were gradual and consistent decreases in the yield of tuber and forage with increasing plant spacing up to the widest. The interaction effects of both main variables on yield were governed by their trends when they behaved individually, i.e. there were gradual decreases in these yield with increasing plant spacing within each date of planting.
