RELEASING OF TWO NEW FLAX VARIETIES "SAKHA 1" AND "SAKHA 2"

Abstract: Towards evolve new varieties of flax, two promising strains from the hybrids (Bombay x I. 1485) and (I. 2348 x Hera) were selected through pedigree breeding procedures and evaluated in 126 yield trials carried out at Sakha, El-Gharbia, El-Behira and El-Giza during the period 1992/93 to 2001/2002 seasons. The two lines 39/92 and 40/88, were named Sakha 1 and Sakha 2, respectively according to the system of registration of the Agric. Res. Center.
Evaluation results indicated that:
* Sakha 1 and Sakha 2 were significantly higher in straw yield; seed yield; plant height; fiber percentage; seed index and oil percentage than the commercial check varieties Giza 7 and Giza 8.
* Generally, it could be recommended to replace Giza 7 by the new strains 39/92 designated as Sakha 1, and the variety Giza 8 by strain 40/88 designated as Sakha 2. Sakha 1 was for release for cultivation in the Nile Delta area because of its high yield and quality of the straw, whereas, Sakha 2 might be released for the southern parts of the Delta and the Northern parts of Upper Egypt because of its high yields of seed and oil.
