AN ANALYTICAL ECONOMIC STUDY OF THE PRODUCTION AND MARKETING OF MAIZE IN EGYPT

Abstract: Wafaa Abo Baker Mohamed Eid : An Analytical Economic Study of the Production and Marketing of Maize in Egypt, Unpublished Master of Science Thesis, Agricultural Economics Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Ain Shams University, 20006 .

Maize Crop is Considered one of Prominent Cereal Crops in Egypt for its Economic and nutrient importance . It is an important Crop for human and animals, in addition to its use in several food industries .
The Present Study, therefore, indends to Shed Light on Production and Marketing aspects, of the Crop and to define obistacles facing its Production and marketing in Egypt, With the Objective of increasing its Production and marketing efficiency .
The study Contains four Chapters, the first reviews previous work on the subject, while the second Chapter analyses Production and economic efficiency of maize crop . Production policy and Supply response of maize are Presented in Chapter three . The fourth and final chapter analyses the economics of marketing systems of maize crop.
The Study found that maize responds positively to the addition of nitrogen and Phosphate fertilizer, in addition to the number of machine hours which reflects the use of mehonigation in irrigation and ploughing .
The Study showed that abolition of subsidizing farm inputs has led to an increase of maize cost of production, and in turn a decrease in the relative advantage of cultivating maize crop. The study has also showed a significant correlation between maize farm gate Price and whole Sale price and retail price. Finally, the study has also showed that the share of middlemen and marketing margins have increased after the application of the economic reform policy .
