Effect of hot pepper and fenugreek seeds supplementation on broiler diets

Abstract: Two experiments were designed to study the effect of feeding broiler chicks on diets containing various levels (1,1.5 and 2%) of local natural feed additives (hot pepper and fenugreek seeds), which were associated with different levels metabolically energies (3200, 3000 and 2800 Kcal/ Kg). The two experiments were only varied according to the protein content in the diets. A total of 270, 7 day- old Hubbard broiler chicks of both sexes were divided into 9 experimental groups of approximately similar body weight. Each group consisted of 3 replicates of 10 birds each. Each group was fed one of the nine experimental diets from 7 to 49 d of age in each experiment. The result I obtained could be summarized as follows:
Final body weights and gains for chicks fed 3000 Kcal ME/Kg were significantly (P<0.05) higher than those fed 2800 or 3200 Kcal ME/Kg.
Moreover, chicks fed hot pepper diets had significantly heaviest body weight and gains than those fed the control and fenugreek diets. Feed intake was increased with decreasing energy level, while the differences among three levels of ME were significant. However, hot pepper diets had (P<0.01) the least feed intake than those of control and fenugreek diets. A significant negative relationship was observed between dietary energy levels and energy intake. Increasing dietary energy level improved significantly (P<0.01) feed and ME conversion, except ME conversion in expo 1. Feeding hot pepper diets improved significantly (P<0.01) feed and ME conversion. Digestion I coefficient of EE, abdominal fat, plasma total lipids, total cholesterol and glucose were significantly lower for broiler chicks fed either hot pepper or fenugreek diets than those fed control diets. There was significant (P<0.05) interaction between source of local natural feed additives and energy levels on body weight, weight gain, feed and ME conversion. No histopathological alterations were detected on proventriculus, gizzard, liver and small intestine of chicks fed different levels of hot pepper. In general, hot pepper, it is a good source of local natural feed additives for broiler chicks.
