Nutritional studies in ruminants (performance and some blood constituents of lactating goats fed diets containing either formaldahyde treated or untreated dried poultry manure)

Abstract: This study was carried out to investigate male sexual behavior, sperm freezability and conception rate in Damascus and Baladi goats.
Eight Damascus, eight Baladi, four 50%Damascus+50% and seven 25%Damascus+75%Baladi male kids were kept under investigation from three months of age to 20 months of age. After occurrence of puberty semen was collectedly by means of artificial vagina once weekly until the end of the experimental period. The freezability of buck spermatozoa was tested in three extenders, namely Tris, cow skimmilk and goat skimmilk. A total of 133 female goats were artificily inseminated with frozen semen collected at different ages of the bucks . Data obtained were subjected to statistical analysis the results of the present work can be Summarized as follows :
1- Body weight at birth affected the body weight of the animals throughout the experimental period. Damascus kids were characterized by
heavy weight (4.6 ± 30 Kg) while Baladi (2.6 ± 25 Kg) and DXB (2.7 ± 28 Kg) regardless to percentage of Baladi blood in genotype of the cross, behaved like Baladi in birth weight.
2- Body weight at lstejaculate or puberty (7-8 months) for Damascus, Baladi, 50%D+50%B and 25%D+75%B bucks was 25.1, 16.2, 15.2 and 16.2 Kg, respectively.
3- The local Baladi kids had the highest values of scrotal circumference at all stages while the exotic Damascus had the lowest values.
4- Blood testosterone concentration was 0.48, 0.65, 0.40 and 0.94 ng/ml, for Damascus, Baladi, 50%D+50%B and 25% +75%B at stage of first mounting, 0.55 0.67, 0.73 and 1.21 ng/ml at first mounting with errection and 0.80, 2.34, 0.74 and 1.74 ng/ml, at first mounting with ejaculation, respectively.
5- Mean of seminal volume of first ejaculate of the experimental kids, regardless to breed groups, ranged from 0.20 to 0.41 ml, initial motility from 15.6 to 33.7%, live sperm from 23.0 to 42.0%, abnormal sperm from 9.0 to 11.6%, sperm concentration (X xl09/ ejaculate) from 0.05 to 0.18 sperm/ejaculate.
6- Testicular growth occurred at two waves the first was a relatively fast testicular growth rate 9 months of age to 20 months of age Scrotal circumference was highly correlated with body weight and age .
7-overall mean of testosterone concentration Started at minmal values (0.07 ng/ml) at the early stage of life (3 months of age) ,Considerably increased to 2.76 ng/ml (p<0.01) at 8 months of age then returned Back to its previous low level, continued like that (0.39 ng/ml) up to the 14th of age. Thereafter, testosterone levels gradually increased (P<0.0l) reaching maximum values (10.37 ng/ml) at 18-20 month of age. Damascus kids were generally lower in testosterone levels than Baladi and their crosses throughout the experimental period.
8- Concerning the number of ejaculation/20 minutes, results of the present study indicate that by 18 month of age breader could promote his goat kid to be buck in routein use
9- Ejaculate volume gradually increased as age advanced. the Trend of the increase was similar in the four breed groups with some fluctuations and variations between breeds.
10- percent of motile sperm cell gradually increased from 25% to 81% as age advanced up to 12 months then after this age values created a plateau, were percentage of motile sperm cells reached maximum (82 to 85%). Differences between breed groups with respect to overall mean percent of motile sperm were not significant. Similar trend was observed for percent live sperm cells in the four breed groups.
11- Increase in sperm concentration tended to be quite similar to that of percent motile sperm cells and percent of live cells. They all gradually increased post puberty till 12 months of age then rate of increase slowed down creating a plateau.
12- Overall sperm cells percent of post thaw motile sperm cells frozen in LN vapour was 49.38% at 24 hrs post freezing and 47.04 one month post freezing. Differences between the four breed groups were not significant in percentage of post-thaw motile cells. On the other hand, percent post-thaw motile cells was low at 9 months of age, increased as age advanced to 12 months of age then changes in post-thaw motility was not significant up to 18 months of age.
13- Tris-yo1k extender vas significant1y more protective to sperm ce11s than qoat and cow skimai1k extenders during the freezing process. However, cow-skimai1k and qoat skim milk might be considered acceptable extender for freezing buck speraatozoa.
14- overa11 mean of the conception rate was 60.63%, conception rate fro. 1st insemination tended to be 10w at 9 month of buck age increased by 12 months of age then va1ues fluctuated up to 18 months of age.
