Genetic and phenotypic relationships between embryonic loss and 305-day milk yield traits

Abstract: Embryonic loss (L) and 305-day milk yield (M) .traits were, analyzed using GIBBS Sampling Program. Variance components, heritability of the two traits and genetic and phenotypic correlation coefficients between them were estimated for cows and heifers using 3200 records.of 1553 Friesian cows: The animals were raised at the Animal Production Research Stations at Sakha and El-Karada of the Animal Production Research Institute, Ministry of Agriculture, Egypt. Data covered the period from 1979 to 2000. The statistical model included four fixed effects, farm, parity, year and season of calving for the two traits. It also included the random effect of animal.
Heritability estimates for the two traits (L and M) were 0.60 and 0.15 for cows and were 0.82 and 0.20 for heifers, respectively. Genetic and phenotypic correlation coefficients between the two traits were -0.10 and 0.29 for cows and were 0.02 and -0.07 for heifers, respectively. The results
support the findings of previous studies which indicated that genetic factors major cause of embryonic loss and that milk production is adversely correlated with the embryonic loss in lactating dairy cows.
