Comparison between baladi cattle and therir f1 crossbreeds with french abondance and tarentaise breeds in some performance traits

Abstract: Perfonnance of FI crossbreds in an upgraded herd of local Baladi (B) cattle with two French breeds, Abondance (A) and Tarentaise (T) was investigated in this study. The herd was kept at Seds Experimental Station belonging to Animal Production Research Institute. Three models including fixed effects of genetic group, parity, season and year of calving and effect of cow within genetic group as a random effect were tested on total milk yield, lactation length, weight of cow, calving interval, calf birth weight and age of cow at first calving. The effect of genetic group was significant on all considered traits except for the cow weight and age at first calving. Parity effect was significant in all traits except for the cow weight. Year affected all the studied traits highly significant except for cow weight. Season effect was non-significant in all the studied traits. Highest milk production and longest lactation length were those for the genetic group of ½T , ½ T (1674.1 kg and 280.4 day), followed by the genetic group of ½A, ½B (1427.2 kg. and 266 day). B milk production was 625.6 kg in 130.3 day. Baladi cows were the heaviest, (387 kg.) as compared to the other two genetic groups (376.5 and 363.4 kg) for ½ T ½ B and ½ A ½ B respectively. Calving interval was the shortest for the Baladi cows, (479.8 day), followed by the genetic group ½ A ½ B (495.7 day) then the ½ T ½ B (510.1 day). The heaviest calves were those of the genetic group of ½ T ½ B, (28.4 kg.), followed by the genetic group of ½ A ½ B (27.1 kg) then B (25.1 kg). Age at first calving was the youngest for the genetic group of ½ A ½ B, (32.2 month) as compared to 33.2 month for ½ T ½ B and B. In conclusion, the results of this study may imply that crossing Baladi cattle with distinctive breeds such as Abondance and Tarentaise would improve both milk and meat production.
