Nutritional and physiological studies on friesian calves fed protected fat and protein diets: 2. some rumen parameters

Abstract: A total of 18 Newborn Friesian calves up to 8 months of age was used in 3 dietary treatment groups to study the effect of feeding protected protein and protected fat diets on some rumen parameters. The lst group (Control) was fed untreated CFM plus berseem hay (BH), the 2nd was fed CFM. 5 % of it was replaced by protected fat (PF) and the 3rd was fed CFM treated with 1% formaldehyde on the basis of its total CP (PP). As affected by dietary treatment at all ages studied. average values of ruminal pH increased significantly (P<0.05) in rumen liquor of calves fed PP as compared to those fed PF and C diets (6.50 vs.6.14 and 5.98, respectively). While concentration of VFA's showed opposite values, being 10.30, 12.54 and 12.57 mEq/100mI, respectively. There was significant (P<0.05) decrease in ruminal pH values and significant (P<0.05) increase in concentration of V F A's in rumen liquor of calves in all groups with age progress. Meanwhile, concentration of NH3-N in rumen liquor was not affected by dietary treatment or age. Protozoal counts in rumen liquor decreased significantly (P<0.05) in calves fed PP (l.017x106/ml) as compared to those fed PF and the control diets (1.234 and 1.337 x106/ml, respectively). Nearly similar trend was observed for bacteria1 counts. being 8.579, 9.120 and 10.380 xl09/ml, respectively. As affected by sampling time, post-feeding values of ruminal pH were significantly (P<0.05) lower and concentration of VFA`s and NH3-N were significantly (P<0.05) higher than pre-feeding values. However, counts of protozoa and bacteria in rumen liquor did not differ significantly. It could be concluded that microbial fermentation was not adversely affected by dietary treatments reflecting normal ranges of ruminal pH values. concentrations of VFA'S and NH3-N and bacterial and protozoal counts in ruminal liquor of ca1ves fed PF and PP
diets.
