Effects of dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids on some immune responses of broiler chicks

Abstract: This study was aimed to evaluate the effects of dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids on some immune responses of broiler chicks. Three hundred and fifty two one day old Arbor Acres chicks were obtained. The chicks were divided into 11 treatments. The experiment extended up to 7 weeks of age. No vaccination or any antimicrobial agents or prevention program was applied in this study. The basal experimental diets were of 23.07% and 20.02% crude protein; and were of 2926.6 and 3074.8 Kcal ME/kg diet for the starter and the grower diet, respectively.
Three sources of oils were used, linseed, maize and sunflower. The eleven treatments aimed to study the effects of each oil alone in treatments (2,3,4, respectively) and the possible combinations among the three oils in treatments (5,6,7,8,9,10 and 11). While chicks in treatment 1 were served (without any adding of oil) as control. The oil was replaced by 3% of the basal diet (in all treatments from 2-11). All diets within each feeding period were formulated to be nearly isonitrogenous and calorie/protein ratio was kept as constant as possible.
Obtained results indicated that dietary oil significantly increased the total count of RBC's and WBC's. While adding sunflower oil to linseed oil improved both counts and increased the antibody titers against SRBC's. White blood cells differentiation (monocytes, heterophils and lymphocytes) Were increased significantly by oil supplementation, especially when sunflower combined with linseed. There was no effect of dietary oil on relative weights of spleen and thymus. While relative weight of bursa significantly increased by adding oil, especially when sunflower was combined with linseed.
