Effect of treatment with growth hormone (R- BST) on the reproductive performance of Damascus goat bucks

Abstract: This study aimed at investigating the response of semen quality, sexual behaviour. testicular volume and blood testosterone concentration in Damascus goat bucks to treatment with recombinant bovine Somatotropin (rbst). Ten mature Damascus bucks were divided into two equal groups. One group was infected with a dose qf100 mg bovine somatotropin buck for five injections every 14 days. The second group was used as control. Two successive semen ejaculate. were collected twice weekly for 6 weeks as a pre-treatment period. 10 weeks experimental period and 6 weeks post.treatment period and were used for determination semen physical characteristics. Sexual behaviour of each buck was evaluated once monthly throughout the experimental period. Testicular volume and body weight were measured and blood testosterone determined at 14 days intervals.
Bucks treated with rbst had significantly higher live sperm percentage, lower abnormal sperm and acrosome damage percentages than the untreated bucks. Testosterone? concentration was significantly (P<0.05) higher in rbst treated bucks than the untreated bucks during the post-treatment period.
