Epigenetics trend of milk yield and litter gain traits in Californian rabbits

Abstract: Genetic parameters of Californian (CA) litter traits were estimated, using Multi-Trait Derivative-Free Restricted Maximum Likelihood (DFREML). A total of (611 lifters from 183 does, 61 dams and 20 sires were used to measure some litter gain traits [lifter gain from birth to 7 days ( LGB-7 from birth to 21 days (LGB-21), from birth till weaning (LGB-W and from 21 days of age till weaning (LG21-W] and a total of 600 lifters, from 183 does, 130 dams and 20 sires to measure some milk yields traits [milk yield at 1st week (MY 1st wk), milk yield at 2nd week (MY 2nd wk) and milk yield at 3rd week (MY 3rd wk). The animal model analysis included parity (P) and year season combination (YS) as fixed effects as well as animals and permanent environmental as random effects.
Heritabilities of considered traits were somewhat low and moderate being 0.05, 0.13 and 0.17 for MY at 1st and 3rd week, and 0.04, 0.12, 0.17 and 0.2 for LGB-7, LGB-21, LGB-W and LG21-W, respectively. Permanent effects were low but were the highest for LGB-W (0.011) and for MY 3rd WK (0.003).
The ranges of sire breeding value for the top 30 % ranked sires were 32 g, 152 g, 302 g and 104g for LGB-7, LGB-21, LGB-W and LG21-W, respectively. However, they were 98g, 189g and 152 for the ranges sires of MY at 1st ,2nd 3rd and 3rd week of age respectively. However, they were 99 g, 359 g, 546 g and 189 g for the top 30 % ranked dams for the same LG traits.
Epigenetic trend for Milk yield were generally positive in the moderate climate season, while, negative for MY and LG traits were in the hot climate.
