Rabbit production under poluted environmental conditions: 4. effect of electromagnetic waves pollution on rabbits performance and its alleviation using Propolis during mature period

Abstract: The experiment was designed to evaluate mature New Zealand White (NZW) rabbits performance as affected by electro magnetic waves pollution ranged 35-45 Micro Teslas and its alleviation using propolis (100 g/ton). All animals were divided into three experimental groups. The first group was kept untreated, while the 2nd and 3rd groups were exposed to electro magnetic waves only or exposed to electro magnetic waves and treated with Propolis, respectively.
Results revealed that, exposing male rabbits to electro magnetic waves significantly increased age at first mating and significantly decreased gonads and pituitary gland weights, scrotal circumference and testicular index at first mating. Exposing rabbit bucks to electro magnetic waves decreased significantly libido and physical semen quality and increased significantly enzymatic activity of semen. Diluted semen quality ejaculated from rabbit bucks exposed to electro magnetic waves significantly decreased, during storage at refrigeration and incubation temperatures, as well as sperm penetration into cervical mucus decreased significantly, while total bacterial count of diluted semen significantly increased. Sexual hormones and mating activity were significantly lower due to electro magnetic waves, while some physiological aspects indicated ability of body-thermoregulation were significantly higher.
Kindling rate, litter size and weight at birth and bunny weight at weaning, as well as milk yield and composition were significantly lower, while pre weaning mortality rate was significantly higher in rabbit does mated naturally or inseminated artificially due to electro magnetic waves pollution.
Results showed that, supplementing 100 gm Propolis/ ton diet of rabbits exposed to electro magnetic waves induced a significant improvement in all parameters studied, but the improvements were also significantly lower than those of control group.
