Somatic cell counts and its importance on dairy farm profits

Abstract: This study was carried out during the period extended from year 2003 to year 2004 on 720 Fresian dairy cows from Sakha Research Station at Kafr EISheikh Governorate. For studying the effect of Somatic Cell Count (SCC) on dairy farm profit and also, studying the effect of SCC on daily milk yield; percentages of (fat, protein, lactose, total solid and SNF) and total (fat, protein, total solid, lactose and amount of milk) Kg/ monthly and Total returns/LE/month.
From each cows we take a milk sample for analysis of the milk constituents which include somatic cell counts, percentage of (fat, protein, lactose, total solid and solid not fat.
From the dairy records found in this farms we determined the average daily milk yield and also, the total milk yield per month.
The Somatic Cell Count (SCC) was determined using Fossomatic machine (Fossomatic 5000, type 71300) and Gerber method.
This study indicated that, the SCC increased during Autumn and Winter seasons than during Spring and Summer seasons and this parameters had negative effect on daily milk yield ; percentages of (fat, protein. lactose, total solid and SNF) and total (fat, protein, total solid, lctose, amount of milk and returns) Kg/ month.The returns from milk sale in Autumn, Winter, Spring and Summer seasons were 492.87, 567.54, 623.05 and 662.64 LE, respectively. While, the milk returns in different SCC categories were 643.5, 628.5, 591, 634 and 493 LE/month, respectively, for cell category of 1000 - 99000, 100000 - 199000, 200000 - 299000, 300000 - 399000 and 400000 to more than 400000 cell/ml.
The logarithmic equations between the SCC (Independent variable) and milk production, returns and milk constituents as a percentge or monthly total amounts, indicated that the increasing of SCC by about 1% than the normal cows causes decrease of daily milk yield;
percentages of (fat, protein, lactose, total solid and SNF) and total (fat, protein, total solid, Ictose, amount of milk and milk returns) Kg/ monthly by a percent of 9,4.67,4.86,4.5,3.61, 3.15,5.11,3.9,2.23,2.12,3.36 and 11.18 %, respectively.
This study also, concluded that the SCC can be used as a perfect tool for judging dairy farm profit, milk quality and susceptibility of the animals to mastitis infection.
