Viability and storagability of the diluted rabbit semen added with quail egg yolk

Abstract: Two hundred seventy two New Zealand White (NZW) rabbits (32 sexual mature bucks aged 7 months and 240 monoparous does aged 6 months) in two consecutive parities of were used in the present study. The study included two experiments, the 1st experiment (in vitro work) was designed to evaluate diluted semen quality; sperm enzymatic activity and total bacterial count of NZW diluted rabbit semen added with different levels of quail egg yolk (5%, 10% or 15%) compared with 5% hen egg yolk (control). The 2nd experiment (in vivo work) was planned to evaluate fertility traits of NZW rabbit does inseminated artificially using diluted semen contained different levels of quail or hen egg yolk (control). Results showed significantly (P<0.05) better spermatozoa storagability and physical semen quality represented by percentages of each of advanced sperm-motility, abnormal and dead spermatozoa and acrosomal damages, activities of semen aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanfhe aminotransferase (ALT), acid phosphates (ACP) and alkaline phosphates (ALP) and pH values in the diluted semen supplemented with 5% or 10% quail egg yolk than those supplemented with 15% quail egg yolk or 5% hen egg yolk (control), during chilled storage at (4-6 °c) for up to three days or incubated at 37°C for up to four hours. Semen quality and pH values decreased significantly (P<0.05) and sperm enzymatic activity increased significantly (P<0.05) with progression of time. Tot4f. bacterial counts in diluted semen were significantly (P<0.05) lower due to 5% or; 10% quail egg yolk in diluent than those of 15% quail egg yolk or 5% hen egg yolk Kindling rate and litter size and weight at birth were significantly (p<0.05) higher for does inseminated by diluted semen contained 5% or 10% quail egg yolk than those inseminated with semen supplemented with 15% quail egg yolk or 5% hen egg yolk It could be concluded that, all reproductive parameters under consideration were improved (p<0.05) by using diluted semen contained 5% or 10% quail egg yolk compared to 15% quail egg yolk or 5% hen egg yolk.
