Performance and metabolic profile of Zaraibi goats under different feeding regimes

Abstract: An experiment on 60 pregnant Zaraibi goats was carried out to study effects of varying levels and roughage / concentrate (R/e) ratios on milk production, body weight changes for the does and their kids, reproductively (abortion, still birth, twining, litter size, kidding rate) and metabolic disturbances. The animals were fed 110 and 140% of NRC (1981) allowances at two roughage concentrate ratios (40:60 and 60:40) in four (G1, G2, G3 and G4, respectively). The main results obtained are statistically, significant increase in daily milk yield by high level of feeding especially high concentrate. Milk composition by lactating goats did not significantly differ with different feeding scheme. The live body weight of kids at the birth and weaning gave positive results with high feeding level. The mortality and pregnancy toxemia rates were reduced with high level of feeding and recorded the lowest values with G3. Thus, it could be concluded that the high level of feeding especially high concentrate had clear positive effects on1y on improving the daily milk yield and growth performance, but also on reducing the pregnancy toxemia.
