Effect of different levels of miswak (Salvadora persica) supplementation on productive performance of local strain

Abstract: A total number of 240 chicks of Dokky 4 strain at hatch were randomly and equally divided into 4 groups to determine the effects of administering Miswak (Salvadora persica) as natural feed additive and growth promoter on growth performance and blood constituents. The 1st group was fed the basal diet only (control), while the 2nd ,the 3rd and the 4th groups were fed the basal diet supplemented with Miswak at the levels of 0.50, 0.75 and 1.0 %, respectively. Birds were fed ad libitum and fresh water was available continuously.
Results showed that chicks fed diet supplemented with Miswak at different levels recorded the highest weights with improving feed conversion ratio at all ages when compared with the control group. Notable, chicks of different dietary treatments consumed less feed than those of the control group. Miswak at different levels lead to significant (P<0.05) increase of total serum protein, albumen, globulin and hormones of GH, T3 and T4 . While, serum total lipids and cholesterol were significantly decreased (P<0.05) compared to the control group.
Conclusively, it can be concluded that supplementation of Miswak as natural growth promoter in poultry diets are the most beneficial for improving growth performance, increased immunity and decreased plasma total lipids and cholesterol without any side effects for birds.
