Effect of recombinant bovine Somatotropin on recovery, quality and in vitro development of embryos in superovulated Cows

Abstract: This study was conducted to determine the effects of recombinant bovine somatotropin rBST injected either at superovulation or at artificial insemination (AI) on recovery, quality and developmental compmtence of superovulated cows. Total of 12 Holstein donor cows were divided into three experimental groups (4 cows in each). Cows in the 1st group were superovulated by PMSG (G1), while those superovulated in the 2nd (G2) and 3rd groups were injected with rBST (500 mg) at the time of PMSG injection and AI, respectively. Embryos were non-surgically flushed 7 days after AI from all groups. Results showed rBST treatment at the time of superovulation (G2) increased (P<0.05) number of transferable embryos, morulae, compact morulae, and (excellent and good( embryos (6.25, 2.00, 3.500, and 5.75/flush) and decreased (P<0.05) number of unfertilized ova as compared to G3 (4.00, 1.00, 2.25, and 2.75/flush) and G1 (4.00, 1.25, 2.25, and 2.75/flush), respectively. Number of total and degenerated embryos, early blastocysts and fair quality embryos were not affected by rBST treatment. The superior survival rate for develop to hatched blastocyst was found in donor cows treated with rBST at initiation of superovulation (G2), being 57.1, 85.9 and 54.5% for G1, G2 and G3, respectively.
In conclusion, administration of rBST at the time of superovulation (PMSG injection) increased number of transferable embryos, decreased number of unfertilized ova and had beneficial effects on quality and viability of embryos.
