Effect of dietary supplementation with powder sage leaves and their oil extract on local hens performance and egg quality during storage times

Abstract: A total number. of 168 Inshas hens and 21 Inshas cocks aged 34 days was assigned randomly into 7 groups of 24 hens and 3 cocks each and then subdivided into three replicates (8 hens + 1 cock / replicate) to evaluate the effect of adding sage leaves and its oil extract as natural antioxidants to local strain Inshas chicken diets on productive, reproductive performance and some egg yolk traits as well as egg quality during storage.
Each group was fed on. one of the 7 experimental diets, three levels of sage powder (SP) (1, 3 and 5% of the diet) in comparison to their oil extracts (SOE) at 270, 810 and 1350 mg/kg diet, respectively), in addition to the basal diet (control) . The study was lasted for 90 days during. The results revealed that, SP or SOE inclusion caused significantly (P<0.05) improved egg production, egg mass and feed conversion values, shell thickness (mm) and shell (%). Laying hens received the SP or SOE with the highest levels had the highest hatchability and fertility percentages. The SP or SOE supplementation had beneficial healthy effects on blood constitutes, where blood plasma lipids were significantly (P<0.05) decreased, while beneficial blood plasma high-density lipoprotein and antibody titter values were improved. In addition, blood plasma malonaldehyde (MDA), as an oxidative stress biomarker was significantly (P<0.05) decreased in treated groups compared to control, which indicate the protective effect against lipid oxidation. Egg yolk content of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, total lipids and triglycerides were decreased significantly (P<0.05) as compared with the control due to addition of all (RP) and (ROE) levels: The effect of dietary sage supplementation on egg content of total bacterial count (log10) during different storage time was so clear, where treatments caused significant (P<0.05) decrease in total bacterial count (log10) for hen's egg content The treatment groups, also decreased significantly (P<0.05) MDA yolk than that of the control. It can be concluded that, dietary 1 kg/kg diet of SP. and 270 mg/kg diet of SOE in laying´s diet improved their production and reproductive performance and some physiological indices through their antioxidant and antibacterial properties, under Egyptian environmental conditions. .
