Effect of season on sex hormones, gestation length, calf birth weight, sex ratio, dystocia, retained placenta and postpartum reproductive performance in friesian cows

Abstract: This study was carried out in Sahka experimental station in Kafr EL-Sheikh governorate. Sixty one Friesian cows ranging between 2nd and 7th parity were used in this study. Twenty-eight cows calved in hot season and 33 cows calved in cold season.
The results showed that, concentrations of progesterone from twenty to one day before parturition tended to be greater in cows that calved in hot season compared with cows that calved in cold season. Concentrations of estradiol-17 β in prepartum period were higher for cows that calved in cold season than that of calved in hot season, but this difference was not significant. Gestation length was shorter (P>0.05) of cows that calved in hot season than that calved in cold season There was no significant difference of calf sex on gestation length. Birth weight of calves during cold season was significantly heavier than birth weight of calves during hot season. The male calves were significantly heavier than female calves. The percentage of incidence of dystocia was higher (21.21 %) during cold season than hot season (10.71 %). Incidence of retained placenta was lower during cold season than hot season Sex ratio tended toward males calved in hot and cold seasons (60.71 and 54.55%, respectively). The interval from calving to first service and the days open was longer in cows calved in the hot season than cows calved in the cold season. Number of services per conception were significantly higher in cows calved in the hot season compared with cows calved in the cold season.
