Many farmers are suffering from a lack of nitrogenous fertilizers subsidized at government distribution outlets from time to time and insufficient to cover the actual ones needs. This research was aimed to identify the current status of Nitrogen fertilizers in Egypt.
The most important research results are as follows:
1- The production, consumption, exports, and imports of nitrogenous fertilizers in the world has increased during the study period, the rates of increase amounted to about 1.5%, 1.8%, 3.3%, 3.7% respectively of the average of each of them, while the self-sufficiency ratio decreased at an annual rate of about 0.32% of the average. All of these variables have enjoyed relatively stable during the study period while the surplus or deficit amounts are less stable.
2- The research results showed that about 60 % of the average global production of nitrogenous fertilizers during the study period have been concentrated in China, India, the United States, Russia, Indonesia. Egypt came in the seventh place in the world in the production of these fertilizers. Approximately 60.8 % of the average global consumption concentrated in China, India, USA, Brazil, and Pakistan. Egypt came in the twelfth largest in the world in the consumption. About 51.7 % of the average amount of global exports have been concentrated in Russia, China, Ukraine, Qatar, Canada, Saudi Arabia, and the United States of America. Egypt came in the tenth place in the global export.
3- The production, self-sufficiency ratio, the amount of the surplus, exports of nitrogenous fertilizers in Egypt have increased respectively by about 5.4%, 3.8%, 12.3%, 10.9 % of the average of each of them during the study period.
4- Egyptian imports marked not to relative stability during the study period, and both the Egyptian exports and the quantities of surplus suffered from the rising of instability coefficient, while all of the production, consumption and rates of self-sufficiency of these fertilizers have enjoyed relatively stable during the study period.
5- The research Results showed that the private sector contributes only 20% of the local consumption needs of these fertilizers and focuses on the export of approximately 76.4% of its production abroad , while the public sector contributes to provide about 80 % of the local needs of these fertilizers.
6- Quantities available for consumption of these fertilizers in the government sector has been unable to cover the basic and essential needs of the main crop in Egypt in 2009 and in the last three years of the study years 2012, 2013, 2014. Deficit ratio was running about 1 %, 12.3%, 21.6 %, 30.5 % of the basic and essential needs during these years.
