Extension needs of rural women to raise and produce poultry in Sharkia governorate.

Abstract: This study aims mainly at determining the knowledge need level of respondent rural women regarding the practices of domestic chicken raising and production, identifying the relationships between the total degrees of knowledge needs of respondent rural women regarding domestic chicken raising and production and each of the studied independent variables, identifying the constraints facing respondent rural women who raise domestic chicken from their point of view and their suggestions to overcome these constraints.
This study was carried out in Sharkia governorate. Three districtswere selected and one village from each district was chosen depending upon the largest chicken production activities in these districts and villages. The sample size was determined by using "Krejcie and Morgan" equation which amounted 357 rural women representing 7.1% of the total population which amounted 4993 rural women in the selected three villages.
A systematic random sample was chosen in each village from farmers' spouses according to the following figures: 115 rural women from Hefna village in Belbees district, 88 rural women from Tarout village in Zagazig district, and 154 rural women from Bahnia village in Diarb Negm district.
A questionnaire was designed including the necessary questions and scales that fulfill the objectives of the study. The instrument was pre-tested by interviewing 34 rural women in Nazlet Al-Azazi, Abou-Hammad district. The results of pre-test revealed that questions and scale items were clear and understandable. Reliability and validity were calculated for three scales regarding attitude towards extension work, attitude towards modernization, and mental flexibility.
Field data were collected by personal interviews in August 2005. Simple correlation, chi square test, means were used to analyze data statistically, in addition to frequencies and percentages.
The main results of the study could he summarized in the following

• The knowledge need level of respondent rural women was relatively high regarding the conditions should be available in the location of chicken raising. But this level was relatively low for the characteristics of good ckicken. Pertaining to the other nine practices, the knowledge need level of respondents was moderate.
• There were significant relationships between the total degrees of respondent rural women knowledge need regarding domestic chicken raising and production practices and each of the studied independent variables: educational degree of respondent rural women, Ieadership degree, degree of rural women attitude towards modernization, degree of mental flexibility, age, farm holding size, degree of exposure to mass media, degree of rural women attitude towards extension work.
