Extension knowledge needs of rural women related to some activities of agricultural production and home economics in some Egyptian governorates.

Abstract: This Study was Conducted to help the project of "Raising the efficiency of rural women in food production" . It aims mainly to determine: the contri¬bution level of rural women in implementing farming operations; their knowled¬ge need level related to some activities of agricultural production and home economics; the extension teaching methods which they preferred to receive ext¬ension messages; the relationship between rural women level of contribution in conducting farming operations and some personal variables; the relationship bet¬ween their agricultural knowledge needs level and some personal variables; and the relationship between their home economics knowledge needs level and some personal variables .
Three hypotheses were stated and tested in its statistical form to achieve the last three objectives.
A systematic random sample of 600 respondents were selected with a percen¬tage equal to 5% of farmers' wives in ten villages of the project in Bahera, Dakahlia, Gharbiya, Giza and Fayoum governorates . The data were collected by personal interviews during the period from March till May 1987 . Simple corr¬elation coefficient was used to test the study hypotheses.
The results of the study revealed that:
A) The contribution level of respondents was high in implementing the operat¬ions of harvesting, weeding, thinning, replanting and fertilization. Also, their contribution level was moderate in implementing planting, hoeing, irrigating and pest control operations. Their contribution level in con-ducting land preparation was low.
B) The knowledge need level of respondents was fairly high about the activity of raising Mulberry silk worms. Also, their level of knowledge need was moderate regarding activities related to nutrition, childhood and motherhood, raising chickens, food storage, raising rabbits, farming operations, raising cattle and milk production. Their level of knowledge need to pub¬lic health and cleaning of their houses was low.
c) The respondents preferred home visits, home extension meetings and rural television programs methods other extension teaching methods in receiv¬ing extension messages.
D) The relationship was negative and very significant between the contribution level of respondents in implementing farming operations and their level of knowledge need about these operations. Also, the relationship was negative and significant between their contribution level and both their educational level and their families' land holding size . The relationship was negative and significant between the knowledge need level of respondents about some activities of agricultural production and their educational level. The relationship was negative and very significant between their level of knowledge need related to some activities of homs economics and their own educ¬ational level of their family members.
According to the previous results, the study tried to direct the interest of the project personnel to exert their great efforts to develop the cognitive system of rural women to meet their knowledge needs and to concentrate on prog¬rams of literacy for the vast majority of rural women.
