Some Factors Affecting Farmers Participation In Some Agricultural Extension Activities In Charbia Governorate

Abstract: This study aims mainly to determine:
(1) The participation level of respondent farmers in each of the following extension activities : extension meetings , Field extension meetings, extension fields and field day.
(2) The contribution of some independent variables, which have significant correlation relationship in interpreting the participation degrees of respondent farmers.
(3) The availability of constraints affecting farmers' participation in extension activities.
To achieve the study objectives, a systematic random sample of 368 farmers were selected from 8942 farmers in eight villages in Al Gharbia governorate by using (Krejcie and Morgan). The data were collected by personal interviews using pre-tested questionnaire during October, November and December 2003. Simple correlation, step-wise, means were used for analyzing data statistically, in addition to frequencies and percentages.

From multiple correlation and regression analyses, five variables significantly affected the participation degrees of respondents in extension meetings (51.2%). They were the leadership degree (34%), the degree of attitude towards agricultural extension (12.6%), the degree of contact with agricultural service centers (2.6%), the availability of constraints affecting the participation in the extension activities (1.4%) and the degree of attitude towards change (0.6%).
From multiple correlation and regression analyses, six variables significantly affected the participation degrees of respondents in the field extension meetings (47.8%). They were the leadership degree (29.9%), the degree of attitude towards agricultural extension (12.1%), the degree of contact with agricultural service centers (2.5%), the availability of constraints affecting the participation in the extension activities (1.7%), the degree of attitude towards change (0.7%) and the degree of innovativeness (0.9%).

From multiple correlation and regression analyses, six variables significantly affected the participation degrees of respondents in extension fields (48.8%). They were the leadership degree (31.9%), the degree of attitude towards agricultural extension (10%), the degree of contact with agricultural service centers (3.1%), the availability of constraints affecting the participation in the extension activities (2.5%), the degree of attitude towards change (0.7%) and the degree of exposure to mass media (0.6%).

From multiple correlation and regression analyses, eight variables significantly affected the participation degrees of respondents in field day (47.8%). They were the leadership degree (31.8%%), the degree of attitude towards agricultural extension (8.5%), the degree of social participation (2.7%), the availability of constraints affecting the participation in the extension activities (1.6%), the total holding size (0.9%), age (0.9%), the degree of informal social participation (0.6%) and the degree of attitude towards change (0.8%).

Third: The constraints affected the participation of respondent farmers in the agricultural extension activities.
There were ten important constraints mentioned with percentages ranged between 43.7% and 72.9% of the total sample. These constraints were as follows: Farmers do not know the times of
Holding extension activities (72%), the extension worker do not extend enough information to farmers abnout the extension activities (70.2%), unavalibility of time for farmers to participate in the extension activities (66.9%), small farming holding size (60.1%) and implementing the extension activities in the big farms only (53.2%).
