Effect of feeding different levels from Kikuyu grass on Friesian lactating cows performance as a summer green forage

Abstract: This study was carried out at EI-Gemiza Experimental Station, Animal Production Research, Institute, Ministry of Agriculture, Egypt, to study the effect of using kikuyu grass (two cuts) with different levels as green summer forage in Friesian lactating cows rations on nutrients digestibility and milk production.
Six digestibility trails and milk production were done using ten lactating cows divided into two groups (five each) “Swing over" methods to evaluate the following experimental rations: Control ration (C) : 60% concentrate feed mixture (CFM)+ berseem hay (BH) ad-libtum according to NRC( 1989) requirements, (T1): 60% CFM + kikuyu grass(K.G) ad-lib, (T2) : 40% CFM + KG ad lib.
The main results showed that, the digestion coefficient of DM, OM, CP, CF and EE for rations T1 and T2 (1st cut) were significantly (P<0.05) higher than the control ration (C). Nutritive values as TDN and DCP of ration T1 were the highest (P<0.05) than control ration. Also, the digestibility of most nutrients and nutritive values as TDN and DCP 2nd cut were significantly (P<0.05) higher for than control ration and T2 ration. The daily milk yield as fat corrected milk (FCM) of T1 ration (11.87kg) was significantly (P<0.05) higher than C and T2 ration (10.27 and 10.80kg,) respectively (1st cut) The same trend was obtained by fat yield (454,387 and 411g for T1,C and T2 rations, respectively). Also in the (2nd cut) the daily milk yield as FCM of T1 ration (12.39kg) was higher (P<0.05) than. C and T2 rations (10.37 and 9.90kg). The fat yield kg FCM were higher for cows fed ration contained kikuyu grass (T1 and T2) than control (C) ration. The results showed that, feeding contain K.G can be used safely in lactating cows rations without any adverse effects.
