Effect of chromium picolinate supplementation on productive perfoarmance of lactating cows

Abstract: This study was conducted to assess the effect of chromium picolinate (Cr Pic) on digestibility, feeding value, milk production and economical efficiency of lactating cows.
Six healthy cross breed Friesian lactating cows (435± 9.5 kg in average) using "Swing over" method to evaluate the following experimental rations:
Control ration (C) : 60% of requirements ( Shehata, 1970 ) were cover from concentrate feed mixture ( CFM ) +berseem hay ( B H ) ad lib.
Ration ( 1 ): control ration + 200 mcg Cr Pic /h/d
Ration (2) : control ration + 400 mcg Cr Pic / h /d .
Results of the present study showed that rations supplemented with Cr Pi c (TR) and TR 2) were highly palatable. Than the control diet Digestibilities of various nutrients for the same rations were significantly (P<0.05 ) higher than control (CR). The feeding values as TDN and DCP were as well higher than control ration.
The milk yield of dairy cows fed rations supplemented with Cr Pic were significantly (P<0.05) higher than those fed the unsupplemented. The 2nd tested ration (TR2) recorded the highest value of milk yield, while C ration showed the lowest one.
Total solids, lactose, fat, solids not fat and protein % of the 2 nd tested ration (TR2) recorded the highest values.
The 2nd tested ration (TR2) recorded the lowest feed cost / kg FCM. and the highest daily economic return and economic efficiency.
