Contribution of Sugar cane Agricultural Televised Programs in Dissemination of Related Technical Recommendations to Sugarcane Farmers in Aswan Governorate

Abstract: The main objectives of this research were: to determine watching score of sugarcane farmers of Aswan Governorate to agricultural televised programs that contribute in dissemination of related technical recommendations concerning sugarcane cultivation; to identify sugarcane farmers’ knowledge level derived from those televised agricultural programs; to identify different obstacles that hinder farmers’ watching to those televised agricultural programs; and to identify the research participants’ suggestions in activating role of televised agricultural programs in dissemination of technical recommendations.
The research was conducted during the period December, 2015 – January 2016 in some villages of Aswan Governorate (Al’awddalat, Edfo District; El-Sabeel, Kum- Ombo Districts). A written questionnaire and interpersonal interviews were used in collecting the research data. A simple random sample encompassed 160 sugar can farmers was drawn (represented 5.6% of sugarcane farmers’ population). Frequency tables, arithmetic mean, percentage, ad standard deviation were used in analyzing the obtained research data.
The main findings of the research came as the following:
- Mean of watching score of the televised agricultural programs was 1.66. 36.87% of the research participants were medium while 33.75% of the researcher watching score was low. The finding emphasized the need to activate role of agricultural extension in activating and monitoring those programs and working also with farmers in order to raise the watching score.
- the general mean of farmers’ knowledge concerning their awareness to sugarcane technical recommendations disseminated by the studied televised programs was 23.8% (high), the mid-rank was 35.6%, then 40.6% for the third rank. The finding indicated the relative decrease of farmers’ knowledge in regard with their knowledge came from the studied programs.
In general, the findings showed importance of dealing with farmers’ low information came from those televised programs throughout clever planning and implementation to those programs.
The research participant addressed different obstacles that hinder their watching scores to those specialized televise programs. In addition, they addressed some suggestion to cope with those obstacles. Those obstacles and solutions are discussed in more detail in the research paper to be sent to policymakers to take proper decisions regarding those issues.
