Achievements

* Establish a sugar cane germplasm collection (noble and wild) for use in breeding.

*Develop new and improved varieties of sugar cane, sugar beet (Egyptian varietals), sweet sorghum and Stevia as natural sweeteners through modern and traditional breeding methods.

*Induced flowering of sugar cane and improved seed setting, flowering of sugar beet to enable breeders to develop national varieties and thus produce seeds locally, and testing sugar crops varieties.

*Introduce, adopt and transfer new technologies to farmers in traditional crop valleys and in the newly reclaimed areas by means of applied research.

*Established a biotechnology and tissue culture laboratory to Manipulate genetic material through biotechnology and genetic engineering to produce better yielding sugar cane, sugar beet and stevia varieties and rapid mass propagation of clones and improved varieties.


*Successfully obtained golden syrup from sweet sorghum. The syrup is used as a staple food, in bakeries and factories.

*Confirmed the superiority of sweet sorghum fibers for use in the paper industry.

*Successfully to extraction pure stevioside and rebandioside to use as a natural sweeteners.

* Successfully obtained diet biscuits were prepared with different levels of stevia sweetener.

*Provide farmers with the appropriate technologies and recommendations to increase their crop production.

*Train the technical staff of Egyptian institutions in sugar crops production and technology.

Scientists at The Agricultural Research Station – Sabahia-(Sugar Crops Station) have many published papers in national and international magazine many and a Thesis degree in sugar crops studies.
