Improving the nutritive value of corn stalks by fungal treatments

Abstract: The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of fungal treatments (Trichoderma reesei, Trichoderma viride and combination from the two fungi) of com stalks (CS) on its chemical composition and cell wall constituents and the reflection of feeding treated corn stalks on nutrients digestibility, nutritive value, some rumen and blood parameters, daily gain and feed conversion of Ossimi sheep. This study consisted of two trials the first one was the digestibility trial and the second one was the feeding trial. In each trial four feeding regime were applied where animals were fed concentrate feed mixture (CFM) to cover the maintenance requirement (NRC, 1985) with ad Libtum untreated or treated com stalks, (T1) the control (corn stalks untreated), (T2) corn stalks treated with Trichoderma reesei. (T3) corn stalks treated with Trichoderma viride and (T4) Corn stalks treated with Trichoderma reesei + Trichoderma viride. The results showed that all treatments of corn stalks (T2, T3 and T4) decreased (P<0.05) DM, OM, CF and fiber fractions contents, while CP and ash were increased (P<0.05) compared to T1. Treatment of corn stalks with (T. ressei + T. viride) improved (P<0.05) digestibility coefficients of all different nutrients and cell wall components compared with untreated one.
Treated corn stalks with combination of the two fungi (T. ressei + T. viride) showed higher (P<0.05) TDN and DCP values than other groups. No significant differences among treatments were recorded for values of rumen pH and NH3-N concentration. However, T4 recorded higher (P<0.05) TVFA's concentration than other groups. No significant differences (P>0.05) were recorded for blood parameters between treated and untreated groups. Lambs fed diet containing fungal treated corn stalks showed higher (P<0.05) daily gain and feed conversion than control.
